Ok, now what?

I took a little trip to my local pottery supply store today. I picked out some clay and some tools but now I'm frozen. (Is it fear?) I don't know where to begin! (Or nerves?) All of the ideas I've had swirling around in my head have mysteriously disappeared. (I think it's both.) I think I need to come back to it tomorrow...

Now-what-2

Feeling nervous,
Lisa

  1. Think basics to start with, round simple beads. That's how we start in lampworking and I wouldn't think it would be any different with clay.

  2. Go to YouTube and search for clay beads and/or pendants. There are lots of clay how toos out there. You will recognize names from the Beads of Clay group, but there are lots to choose from.

There are little tricks out there like when you make the hole in the bead, push the needle tool almost through then turn it and go in the other way. This prevents clay from sticking out like it would if you pushed the tool all the way through.

A few basic polymer techniques can be used with earth clay and there is even more videos out there for polymer.

  3. Thanks so much ladies! Good ideas. I'm definitely going to look for some videos on YouTube too. I realized there are still a few tools I need to get but I plan to get started later this week. :-)

  4. Just jump on in and get your hands dirty. That is the only thing that I can say. And so what if your first attempts aren't great!? You are here to learn this craft not master it out of the gate! And you will keep those first attempts because they will be the proof of the seeds of your beginnings. Good for you, Lisa in taking this great first leap!
    Enjoy the day!

  5. Open it and play! Don't try to make anything, let it happen. (sounds crazy!) Enjoy the feel of the clay in your hands! :)
